Praise God for our Calling for Justice! by Linda Watts, Board Member

I continue to be amazed about all the volunteers connected with the ministry of Family Promise.   Many hours of hosting, preparing food, playing with children, offering money and a plethora of resources are given weekly to help families who are homeless regain their financial stability.   The heart of Family Promise grows bigger and bigger!

I am reminded of a statement by Bill Moyers, which keeps our vision broad and never-ending.   I include it here:
“Charity is commendable; everyone should be charitable. But justice aims to create a social order in which, if individuals choose not to be charitable, people still don’t go hungry, unschooled or sick without care. Charity depends on the vicissitudes of whim and personal wealth; justice depends on commitment instead of circumstance.  Faith-based charity provides crumbs from the table; faith-based justice offers a place at the table.”
-Bill Moyers, in his foreword to Faith Works by Jim Wallis

Charity and justice are both essential in working towards the creation of God’s Kingdom on earth.  And yes, justice does require advocacy, which leads us to become politically involved in assuring that all have access to a “seat at the table”

I don’t know about you, but it is always easier for me to offer food, friendship and emotional support than it is to move into the confusing and frustrating system of our political system.   But when we look at our calling ahead, justice calls us to keep working and working and working.  Praise God for our calling for justice!
