There are days for all of us where we find ourselves feeling completely overloaded, completely washed out and spent by the daily stresses, hectic pace of life, demands put on us by family obligations, work, bills, friends, even from our faith communities.  One of my favorite Psalms has a passage that touches me when I am feeling overloaded, “Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all of your waves and breakers have swept over me”  Ps 42:7 (NIV).
These type of days are fairly common in the program for the guests of family promise. There are days when getting up and doing chores is somewhat of a success, with so much already on your plate.  Days when one more required action item encouraged by staff seems like a breaking point.  One more rejection from a job that you are completely qualified for, one more wet diaper, one more bill,  one more week in the program, one more family disagreement with no private place to work it through together… all feel like waves and breakers sweeping over….

There are days like this for staff too… a family near graduation from the program, savings in good shape – and a transmission repair wipes out the savings.  There are daily stories, pain and trauma shared, marriage difficulties and stresses, parenting concerns and issues all conducted in public view , breaking points for guests, advocacy when they have lost hope of finding their voice…  “all your waves and breakers have swept over me”…
On those days what is my response?  Sometimes it takes those waves and breakers to cry out to where all true help comes from.  Oh how I wish I would see the signs coming on the horizon before getting crashed in the waves…  But until I learn that, I will Stop, Drop and Pray…
