Why do you sponsor the 5K? Family Promise is a special organization and an example of community partnership to address an important need. We are so thankful for the many volunteers and proud to be part of the support network.

Do you participate with Family Promise throughout the year? My family has actively participated in Family Promise host opportunities through our church for over 10 years. Three times per year our church hosts a Family Promise group and we either share in one meal and most of the time my wife (sometimes me) stays with one of our three children overnight to give them a volunteer experience. Each child usually stays overnight with a parent once a year.

Why I Volunteer!

Dr. Robert and Katherine Dinsdale

Congregation: Vintage Church

How do you participate in the 5K? We volunteer. I (Bob) get to ride the pace bike. Every year at the Home Run I (Katherine) get to cheer like crazy as runners cross the finish line and then snip the timing chips off the runners’ shoes. It’s my favorite way to get a lot of sweaty, breathless hugs!

Years you’ve volunteered for the 5K Home Run: We’ve participated in all of them. (This year marks our 7th year!)

Why do you volunteer for the 5K? We volunteer because the work of Family Promise is life-giving for the guests, for us, and for our community.

How do you participate with Family Promise throughout the year? In addition to serving as a volunteer during our hosting time at Vintage Church, I (Katherine) serve on the Call to Community (C2C) committee, helping recruit and match volunteers to serve as encouraging friends to each family that enrolls in LFP programming. Serving as a C2C partner is a privilege, I think. I like being assigned a guest family and having the chance to come alongside them and get to know them a bit during the weeks they are in our program. Often those friendships last long beyond the family’s time in Family Promise.

How do you participate in the 5K (run/walk, volunteer, sponsor)? As a runner.
Years participating in the 5K Home Run: This next race will be my 7th year running the 5K Home Run!
Why do you participate in the 5K? When I first ran it in 2014, this event was my first-ever road race, and it was such a wonderful experience all around. The course is fun to run, the post-race activities are enjoyable, and all the volunteers are just so kind and friendly. It’s become something I look forward to every May.
Why is Family Promise important to you? The work that Family Promise does is so important for our community. Sometimes we all need a little assistance getting back on our feet, and Family Promise helps with that.

How do you participate in the 5K? Run
Years participated in the 5K Home Run: Last year was my first … and looking forward to taking part again this year.
Why do you run the 5K? I love running.
Why is Family Promise important to you? I became aware of Family Promise after my mother passed. I had all her furniture from her apartment – all pretty nice – and wanted to give it to someone, or an organization, that could put it to good use. Family Promise folks came over to pick it up and also told me more about the organization. I was very impressed and also knew that my mother would have LOVED her things going to such an important cause.

Rev. Matt Sturtevant

Congregation: Pastor at First Baptist Church of Lawrence
Years participating in the 5K Home Run: I think four. We have been out of town for a year or two on race day, but I remember runner shirts from green, blue and grey years, and a “please don’t run me over” yellow from the year where my family and I volunteered at a water stop.

Why do you participate in the 5K? It isn’t to win the race, that’s for sure! I love to run, especially with family members and church members, as I have done each year that I have run it. But I am never aiming for a medal! Instead, the reward comes from running with people I love, as well as helping an organization that I love. Family Promise is such a worthwhile group, and this is a fun way to connect folks in the congregation to their work. My profile pic is from a long trail run last fall with a couple of guys from the church. Bryan Miller and Scott Lamb have both supported Family Promise and the Home Run, and not only do we all like to run together, but we have this cool synergy in that we also all care about the work of Family Promise. And they are just the tip of the iceberg of First Baptist folks who run, walk, volunteer to hand out bagels, or do whatever at the race. I participate because it is a part of a year-long, church-wide commitment to Family Promise and their work.

How do you participate with Family Promise throughout the year? Our church hosts, so whenever our guests are here, I get to slip over from my office to the gym and check in on guests and volunteers. Plus, each week, our family picks a slot to host or spend the overnight. We are always watching to see if our kids are going to be the same age as the kids there that week. Depending on the families and the ages, we often overlap our kid’s ages with our guests’, so it is cool that they have something in common.

“The Rock Hillers” from Rock Hill Church

Years participated in the 5K Home Run: This will be our 3rd.

Why do you participate in the 5K? We do this particular run because we love that Family Promise helps local families who need extra help. It is something that our kids in our church can do to serve and raise awareness for themselves for families in our city. We train for this race as a group. It has built comradery as we cheer each other on and many in our group have improved their times from the previous year.
