Location address: 4102 W. 6th Street, Lawrence, KS
Years sponsoring the 5K Home Run: 3. We also sponsor the golf tournament and auction event in the fall.
Why do you sponsor the 5K? It’s a win-win for the community. It is a great way to celebrate a holiday weekend with friends and family from the community. We encourage our employees to participate and will pay for their entry fees with a guest.
Do you participate with Family Promise throughout the year? We try to keep Family Promise present in our thoughts and prayers throughout the year. Our whole family worked the 5K Home Run race and had a great time meeting people involved with Family Promise and seeing so many people in the community who care about the program and what it does. Our family was able to help work in the temporary housing building next to the day center by laying sod and staining doors. I drive the Family Promise van on Friday mornings, which has become a highlight of my week. Driving the van is a highlight because I get to meet families that are succeeding and giving so much to this program. The spirit I get to witness from families at 6:30 in the morning changes the way I operate as a resident of Lawrence and affects the way we operate our business and family. We were able to connect with Family Promise’s adopt-a-family program at Christmas for the past three years, which allows our whole family to share in supporting another family in Lawrence. The spirit and work of Family Promise of Lawrence makes it hard to ever say no to supporting, connecting, serving, and celebrating with them when we can. Some things in our day feel unsolvable, but Family Promise of Lawrence is helping to solve the problem of homelessness one family at a time — and it’s changing families (including ours).

Why I Volunteer!
Dr. Robert and Katherine Dinsdale
Congregation: Vintage Church
How do you participate in the 5K? We volunteer. I (Bob) get to ride the pace bike. Every year at the Home Run I (Katherine) get to cheer like crazy as runners cross the finish line and then snip the timing chips off the runners’ shoes. It’s my favorite way to get a lot of sweaty, breathless hugs!
Years you’ve volunteered for the 5K Home Run: We’ve participated in all of them. (This year marks our 7th year!)
Why do you volunteer for the 5K? We volunteer because the work of Family Promise is life-giving for the guests, for us, and for our community.
How do you participate with Family Promise throughout the year? In addition to serving as a volunteer during our hosting time at Vintage Church, I (Katherine) serve on the Call to Community (C2C) committee, helping recruit and match volunteers to serve as encouraging friends to each family that enrolls in LFP programming. Serving as a C2C partner is a privilege, I think. I like being assigned a guest family and having the chance to come alongside them and get to know them a bit during the weeks they are in our program. Often those friendships last long beyond the family’s time in Family Promise.

Why is Family Promise important to your congregation? We absolutely love working with and hosting Family Promise! It’s always very exciting when newer folks to our church get on board and help to host or provide whatever is needed for the rotations. Many have found this to be their area to get involved in when they arrive at our church. Our congregation really steps up for FP. We also love the connections we make with the guests through hosting. We have a couple FP graduates who are active in the life of our church. We have some families giving rides to a couple current guests on Sunday mornings. It is wonderful to see all the people they already know when they walk into the building due to hosts that are greeters, etc. So really, it is connections and relationships that we love.
