Gianna Hochstetler – Family Service Coordinator

Before I graduated with my masters degree in social work from KU, I studied peace, justice and conflict studies at a small liberal arts college in Northern Indiana. I chose to pursue a higher education in social work because it was a profession that focused on creating solutions for the social inequities we see in our communities. Family Promise has been a great place to land as a new social worker. The team is very passionate about providing comprehensive case-management to all families served. I am grateful to be part of an organization that is dedicated to offering support to families struggling to make ends meet in our community. Many parents who face homelessness feel deep shame and failure. I’m passionate about destigmatizing this experience, helping families become more stabilized, and reducing the risk and frequency with which this occurs. Housing is a human right and I am grateful to be part of helping families achieve their goals.
I have enjoyed becoming more engaged in the Lawrence community through the rugby club (Go Bisons!) When I’m not training for rugby, I take my little terrier on walks and listen to audiobooks thanks to the Lawrence Public Library Libby app. Besides reading, I love baking treats and trying new food for my roommates to sample. My latest hit was homemade pita bread. Truly delicious. My days aren’t long enough to try all of the things I’d like, but my hope is to do more water painting and crocheting before the rugby season picks up again.
