In a typical year, over 12,000 hours of service are donated by our volunteers! There are so many ways to serve at Family Promise! If you have a passion, we can find a volunteer role to fit your skills and schedules. Look over the opportunities listed on this page and then contact us for volunteer training.
Become a Host or Support Congregation
By hosting for Family Promise a congregation can serve a mission in their own building. The entire family and congregational community, youth and seniors can all easily participate together. Congregations open their doors to Family Promise guests for one week each quarter. Together along with supporting congregations the guests are provided safe lodging, meals, hospitality and friendship. If your church would like to learn more about becoming a hosting or supporting congregation please contact Dana Ortiz.
“A church helping a family in need gives me hope for the family; churches working together to help a family, gives me hope for the church.”
—Father Matt Zimmerman, St. Margaret’s Episcopal
Volunteer with a Host or Support Congregation
Volunteers are needed at our 13 hosting congregations to fulfill a variety of roles: Meal preparation, overnight hosting, laundry, room set-up, and evening hosts. Volunteers do not need to be a member of a congregation to volunteer but must complete a one-time training session.
Sponsor a Work Day
Sponsoring a work day is a great way to introduce your group to Family Promise. Groups are involved in a variety of projects with a variety of skill levels. Youth groups, Sunday school classes, University groups, and congregations help with cleaning, building, organizing, landscaping, and many other tasks at the Day Center and transitional houses. Work days can be arranged to fit most schedules and time constraints contact Kristin Montgomery for more information.
Spend Time with Guests
Spend time with our guests of all ages at the Day Center. Help young guests with homework, or activities. Participate in a Life Skills dinner and class. Help plan graduate program fun activities! Become a Call to Community Partner (C2C). We would love to find a way for you to use your gifts at Family Promise of Lawrence. For more about this volunteer opportunity, see our Call to Community page.
Donate Wish List Items
The Wish-List consists of items that our guests need. Little ones need diapers, Moms need shampoo. Everyone needs toothpaste. Follow this link to see our current wish list.
Office volunteers help with filing, data entry, mailings, and organizing our Day Center. Most office volunteers serve for a few hours each week at and have a chance to help with the administrative side of this ministry but also build great relationships with the guests.
“The families were so nice and appreciative of our work. I would like to become friends with them!” —Broderick T.
“I thought it was really interesting to see how the system works and what everyone does to take care of everyone else”
Overnight hosts are needed to stay at area churches. This is typically a commitment from 8:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m.
Evening Host hang out with families after dinner. They may play games with kids, chat with parents, or help out with babies.
Office helpers work with the Day Center staff. They will assist with general office responsibilities such as: data entry, typing notes, collating newsletters, putting together mailings, or mailing cards to graduates.
A one-time training session is required for all Family Promise Volunteers. Training sessions are held the first Monday of every month at the Day Center: 905 Tennessee Street at 6-7:00PM. Please contact Kristin for more information at [email protected]
