How many of us or people we know and love have operated near the edge for months or years or lifetimes. We try to balance our energy, commitments and finances to get us through thin and difficult times. But when we are on the edge and something happens such as a car needed to get us to work breaks down or a child breaks a leg or becomes seriously ill or we lose our jobs, our lives go over the edge. In those situations, if we have no backup and no family or friends who can help, we are falling. It is then we need the help and support of organizations such as Lawrence Family Promise. Our Family Promise guests make a huge commitment when they join us. They request placement in our service, in order to protect their families and get the advice and support they need to get the family back on solid ground. This takes commitment, hard work and courage. They become contributing members of an organization that both requires much commitment from families and provides a circle of support that can help put families back as contributing members of our Lawrence Community. My admiration goes out to our guests who can put their children first, seek this assistance, make this commitment and then move out into the community to provide help to other families. My admiration also goes to the staff and volunteers who guide this process; provide encouragement, support and resources to families who need their assistance. None of us are very far from the edge and I believe God calls us to work along side our guests to provide a hand back up to stability.
