I recently participated in an open house for Grace EPC that Family Promise of Lawrence hosted at the day house one beautiful Monday morning. I don’t attend Grace but I wanted to be at the open house in order to see some of the people that I know from that wonderful congregation as well as meet some new friends and supporters of FPL. I enjoyed seeing the smiles on the faces of those who took time out of their day to be there as their first ever tour of the day house. It was equally fun to see the reaction of those tourists that had been there before, but not since the awesome summer renovations that were done this summer by an army of volunteers, and due to the generosity and love of a number of donors.
The best part of that morning, however, was during a lull in the action when I sat down and held one of the three babies (all under the age of 6 months) that are currently in the program. As I was holding that child, I looked around and my eyes fell on the other two mothers caring for their babies. It struck me how important this program is as I wondered where these babies and their mothers would be if not for the network of churches, coordinators, volunteers, donors, board and committee members and staff that all work so hard to keep this program funded and operating.
I would encourage anyone who has not visited and toured the day house to do so. You will, in no uncertain terms, understand how important and effective Family Promise is. I promise you will realize that FPL, and the wonderful families that it serves, is vital to the Lawrence community, and worthy of your time, treasure, and prayers.
